Couples therapy is much like individual therapy. There is, though, one clear difference - it is crucial to define how the couple communications and bridge the rifts where misunderstanding is born.
Often in couples therapy, both partners are seeking the same outcome and possibly communicating similar needs and wants, only the style of communication is awkward and neither person is understood. When this is the case, it can seem as if one or the other individual is speaking a foreign language, feelings get hurt and arguments ensue. As a result of this, confusion, arguments and further tension can result.
Because of different listening and speaking styles, couples struggle in relationship. In many situations, couples are “hung up” on the specifics of a given struggle, when it is much more efficient and prosperous to study the broken link in communication.
Though it may be valuable to work through some specific arguments that were born out of different communication styles, it is most important for couples to move into the “how” one another works. The “why” can come later.
Couples therapy can align communication and teach tools that will assist in being heard and in the process of listening. Homework assignments are very much a part of this learning process.
